According to Kevin Ebuko, who identified himself as a close family member, Alex Ekubo had become distant from his biological family. He alleged that Alex Ekubo was particularly close to his stepmother and claimed that this affected his relationship with the Ekubo Okwareke family. He rarely attends family gatherings or shows interest in activities involving the Ekubo Okwareke family, yet he never once missed gathering from the stepmother’s side. He went on to say it was so heartbreaking to see Alex grow so distant from his biological family. Kevin Ekubo further alleged that Alex’s stepmother arranged for him to marry the daughter of one of her close friends without the involvement of his immediate family.
He also claimed that during the time of Alex’s illness, the immediate family was allegedly not informed until after his passing, only for the stepmother to announce his passing to the public. “Alex Ekubo, when he was alive, rejected his biological mother, and the reason behind such animosity, even on his sickbed, was questionable. His funeral was planned and carried out by the stepmother and the members of her family that Ekubo Okwareke family does not know about, I think I was the only family member from Ekubo Okwareke family that was present during the funeral giving all the hassle from the stepmothers family for me not to observe the funeral process but I stood my grand to make sure I observed every single thing that happened as it was my last respect to my late brother Alex Ekubo” – Kevin Ebubo.
